Grouse Grind

Nature's Stairmaster

The Grouse Grind is a near-vertical 2.9km (1.8 mile) hike up Grouse mountain, offering an intense workout with 2,830 stairs and an elevation gain of 2,800 feet. You can understand why “The Grind” is a favourite spot for locals to improve their fitness level in a hurry.

On average, you can expect the Grouse Grind climb to take up to an hour and a half to complete, depending on your fitness level, novice hikers should allow up to two hours. You’ll want to bring some money (for the ride down) and water along, and maybe a dry shirt to change into after the hike.

As you climb the Grouse Grind you will notice signs marking your progress. For first-timer Grind hikers the 1/4 marker can be quite discouraging, as you may not be sure you are going to make it. Don’t worry, just keep on going at a slow, steady pace. You’ll feel much better when you see the 1/2 and 3/4 waymarkers!

Once you reach the top of the Grind, head toward the Grouse Mountain Chalet and up the stairs. Inside you can purchase your ticket for the Skyride back down the mountain. You are welcome to stay and enjoy the many activities and attractions on Grouse Mountain. There are several places where you can cool off and get some snacks and refreshments.

Downhill hiking is not permitted on the Grind due to rockfall concerns, trail damage and congestion issues on narrow sections of the trail.
