The Shipyards District – Lower Lonsdale

North Vancouver’s past and present meet up in The Shipyards District, also known as Lower Lonsdale. In this neighbourhood, you’ll find shipbuilding and where the working tugboats live as well as boutiques, specialty food shops, galleries, restaurants of every description and antique stores.

Lower Lonsdale is North Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, steeped in history and bursting with shops, restaurants, cafés and pubs that truly capture the unique spirit of the North Shore. The area extends four blocks up Lonsdale Avenue and two blocks east and west, but its heart is at The Shipyards.

Lonsdale Quay Market

The Lonsdale Quay Market has more than 80 unique shops and services selling everything from fresh West Coast seafood to handmade chocolates. It is also where you’ll find the SeaBus ferry to Vancouver and bus terminal. Walk along the pathway to the west – you’ll find the kid-friendly Waterfront Park. You can enjoy the public art and great views of the city.

The Shipyards

Centrally located on North Vancouver’s vibrant waterfront with unobstructed views of Vancouver’s stunning skyline to the south and the soaring North Shore Mountains to the north, The Shipyards has indicators of the area’s rich history while also housing some of the North Shore’s newest developments and attractions. The Shipyards is home to The Pipe Shop — a historic events venue, Tap & Barrel and one of the largest licensed patios in BC, and Shipyards Commons — splash park by summer and outdoor ice skating by winter.

The neighbourhood’s three centrally located hotels – Lonsdale Quay Hotel, Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier, and Seaside Hotel make it a perfect neighbourhood to stay and explore.

Burrard Dry Dock Pier

Located on the City’s historic Shipyards site the 700-foot long Burrard Dry Dock Pier and smaller floating St. Roch Dock offer spectacular 360-degree views of the North Shore and Vancouver skylines. The Pinnacle Hotel at The Pier and Seaside Hotel located just steps from the Pier and the Lonsdale Quay Market.

Park the car or take the sea bus and put on your walking shoes. Lower Lonsdale is a great walkable neighbourhood to explore. Walk along the Quay for some of the best views of downtown Vancouver across the water, and up Lonsdale Avenue for a wealth of places to eat and shop including the new Shipyards Brewery District!

For those interested in the arts, the new Polygon Art Gallery is a must-see modern art gallery with a focus on photography and media-based art.
