Haft-sin tables are traditionally decorated with seven items – since seven is considered a lucky number. Each item begins with the letter sin (s) in Persian, and each item is a symbol of spring and renewal, including:
- Seeb (apple), representing beauty
- Seer (garlic), representing good health
- Serkeh (vinegar), representing patience
- Sonbol (hyacinth), representing spring
- Samanu (sweet pudding), representing fertility
- Sabzeh (sprouts), representing rebirth

Event Details
As part of MONOVA’s Researchers Reveal Speaker Series, join artist Nathan Lee for a talk about his work The Rookery, an open-source paper model diorama that explores the lives of 36 men of Chinese descent who lived and worked at the North Shore’s first settler community of Moodyville.
In 1889, a “Chinese Rookery” was located on the lowlands of the site nearest the exit chute of the mill. Little is known about the lives and working conditions of the people that lived here.
The model is an interpretation of the site conditions based on the available archival information. Find out about Nathan’s research in the Archives of North Vancouver (3203 Institute Road) and about his process of reconstructing the narrative of the Chinese community at Moodyville.
Refreshments will be available, and after the talk visitors will be welcome to stay and tour the Archives with staff.
