An Evening of Storytelling and Lacrosse
Please join, Elder Nekwimetstn (Sam Seward) as he shares his life-long journey in Lacrosse. Nekwimetstn is currently a coach, assistant manager and on the Board with the North Score Indians SR team, he is also Head Coach for Team BC U-19 Boys lacrosse team who will be travelling to Halifax for the North American Indigenous Games 2023. For many communities, sport plays an integral role in bringing people together, building social & cultural capital and fostering greater inclusion. Join us for this interactive workshop to learn about the history of lacrosse and its connection to Indigenous culture and ways of being. Participants will also have an opportunity to reflect on the connections between sport, culture and experience of social belonging. This is a hand-on, all-ages workshop and participants will have the opportunity to work on basic Lacrosse skills with Nekwimetstn (Sam). Nekwimetstn ( Sam Seward ) I was born and raised Squamish, I am also Snuneymexw, I am proud of who I am and where I come from. I have always been involved in my culture with my family. I attended St Paul’s Indian Day School with friends and family who are Squamish and Tsliel-Waututh. I am currently learning our Squamish Language. I have played sports all my life making lifelong friendships. I have played, coached, managed, scouted and offered lacrosse clinics in schools and native reserves. I have fished on rivers all my life, net fishing, drifting with a net, using a gaff hook attached to a vine maple pole and fished with a fishing rod. I am a Red Seal carpenter and have contracted and built homes for the Squamish Nation since 1986. I am an actor and have worked on TV, Movies and Theatre. Weaving is an important journey in my life, I teach in schools, and the Burnaby Village Museum. I have travelled to many places including Germany to share wool weaving in high schools.
