Come join us to practice your drawing skills in a friendly, non-competitive environment. We alternate professional models that will pose unclothed, aiming for diversity in age, gender and body shape. This group is for both amateur and experienced artists, and we welcome all skill levels.
The 3-hour session will have a series of short poses to warm up ( 1 and 2 minutes) and a few long poses (5 minutes to 15-25 minutes).
What should I bring?
We have the life-drawing essentials: chairs, many easels, and a few drawing donkeys, music…
Bring your drawing materials, paper, and a board. Our artists are using pencils, charcoal, ink, pastels, watercolor… The poses in the regular sessions are too short to have time to paint with acrylics or oils.
We will have a break in the middle of the session so you are welcome to bring some food for yourself or even something to share.
If you have a light portable easel, you can bring it too.

These pillars encompassed essential aspects such as selecting the right materials, mastering edge control by understanding the interplay of color, moisture, and brushwork on both paper and brush, adopting a gradual light-to-dark workflow, and gaining a preliminary insight into comprehending the diverse color ranges within a painting.

Event Details
Artist and mycologist, Willoughby Arevalo led participants on a walk to learn about local fungi and plants and how they interact with other members of their ecosystems, including humans.
Willoughby has been leading Art & Mycology at at Mountainside Secondary – a program that uses various visual, experiential, movement, literary, and performance art practices focused on fungi to build awareness of how all our lives are connected in society and the natural world. This last spring, we invited Willoughby to guide a walk with Traditional Knowledge Keeper T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss, as part of Feathers & Fungi, and that walk sold out in minutes. We are very excited to invite Willoughby back this fall for a Art, Fungi & Plant Walk.

Embodied meditations inspired by fungi
Dive into autumnal embodied meditations, inspired by fungi’s mysteries, to connect with nature’s rhythms. Explore mycelial networks and our bond with the natural world in this accessible workshop. How do fungi move? Are mycelial networks similar to our own fascial web? How can we open our senses to connect with the natural world around us? We will explore these questions through the body. Participants will engage in movement-based and embodied meditative activities inspired by forest bathing, fungi and the mycelial web. This workshop is for anyone curious about the body and ecology. No experience necessary.
”These days I stop at trees and fallen leaves. I look and feel for a little longer and gentler. The forest movement practice was delightful and had an impact on me. Thank you.” – workshop participant.
“Many dancing practices are very human centered. Isabelle shared some amazing practices that allowed participants to expand how they think of dancing- in a way that involves the natural multi species world instead of separating themselves from it.”
– Chloe Humprey, Program Director, Squamish Nature Learners

As we venture into the intermediate series, our aim is to build upon these foundational elements, taking our skills to the next level. Our first focus will be on refining our ability to achieve a variety of edges in our artwork. This crucial skill will infuse our paintings with depth and dimension. Secondly, we will delve deeper into the intricate relationship between value (lightness or darkness) and color (chroma), enhancing our comprehension and application of these concepts. Acquiring a deeper understanding and hands-on experience with these elements will naturally cultivate a heightened sense of confidence in our artistic approach. As our confidence grows, we’ll have the freedom to experiment and embrace a more fluid, expressive style in our creations.
Throughout this journey, our overarching goal remains unchanged: to develop a cohesive vocabulary and artistic language in watercolor that empowers us to wield control over our creative expression. Depending on the needs and preferences of the group, we may also revisit and refine our approaches to sketching as a foundation for successful watercolor painting.
