Exhibition Hours: Monday-Friday from 10am-4pm and during evening and weekend performances.
Our world is full of colour & colour is full of diverse meanings & interpretations. We associate certain colours with certain moods or ideas. The artwork in Chromatic Connections invites us to enjoy dazzling riots of colour & dynamic monotone studies, all while interpreting what each tone & shade means to the artist & to us.
Adriele Au is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is a hybrid of painting, drawing & sculpture using mixed media & repurposed objects which address the themes of emotions, home, time & nostalgia. Reflecting the value of connection with community, family & friends, her Puddluv series references play & celebration. Au’s works, made from party streamers & birchwood panels, utilize colour to evoke welcoming, cheerful emotions & to illustrate diversity in all walks of life. The synergistic meanings of connection & celebration are on display as brightly coloured irregular shapes dance & swirl into each other, like joyful memories or people coming together for singular purpose.
Paul Gravett is an abstract photo based artist whose experimental work explores the intersections of photography & contemporary art. The works in his Colour Study series originate with photographs of papers & films in a particular colour family or relationship, layered on a stack of glass shelves. Each layer is photographed in focus as the others fall outside of the field of focus. The images are layered & blended to create vivid yet soft abstractions that reference contemporary art, including pointillism, colour fields, collage, & textures. Gravett’s experimental technique remains true to the original photographs as nothing is added or subtracted in the process – everything that makes up the final image originates from the original set of photographs.

Though raised in Artemisa, an hour outside of Havana, Alex Cuba’s artistry is as far-flung as the place he has settled and lived for over fifteen years: Smithers, BC, 14 hours north of Vancouver. His music at once incorporates his roots and is a unique amalgam of styles, having collaborated with artists ranging from Jason Mraz to Ron Sexsmith and Nelly Furtado; and bringing together melodies, popsoul hooks and rock chords in songs that may seem to bear little resemblance to traditional Cuban form.
A forward-thinking, indie-minded artist, Alex has amassed a steadily growing following among critics and fans. With over 20 awards and nominations to his name, including 4 Latin Grammys and two Junos Awards and three Grammy nominations. Alex carries his Cuba within, incorporating subtle jazz influences, gained from his early years as a bass player in Cuba, and tasteful, sophisticated chords and lyrics expressing his poetry in an undeniably Cuban way. His growing body of work defines a unique musical place in the Latin diaspora.
Building on the 2017 Grammy nominated release Lo Unico Constante with its back to roots introspection, his new collection of songs will be released in September 2019, including 6 featuring’s with Latin American singers and songwriters. Alex joined with Toronto based engineer, John Bailey to record in Gibson’s BC at The Farm Studio. A decision to record all the instruments came to Alex Cuba years ago when the making demos for new songs and wanting to share that undeniable personal sound. A series of singles will be released leading up the album release, the first on February 22nd, titled, Yo No Sé. Followed by Dividido, the first duet to be released featuring Silvana Estrada on March 22nd.

Fred Astaire—the greatest of all movie dancers—takes the spotlight in this show presented by classic film scholar and frequent Kay Meek speaker MICHAEL VAN DEN BOS. Illustrated with a rich bounty of film clips, Michael explores the distinctive diversity and invigorating inventiveness of Fred Astaire’s considerable dance work in classic Hollywood movies. Also highlighted is Astaire as a vocalist, favoured by many famous songwriters of his era as the best interpreter of their tunes, who introduced more songs that became standards than any other 20th-century musical performer. So, what do you say . . . shall we dance?

It’s never too early to talk about death – and the good news is that it isn’t a one-time chat that you have to get exactly right. It’s a conversation that will evolve and change with you, and we’re here to get you started.
Over the course of the evening, we will share stories, dispel myths, and inspire you to think and talk about death and dying in a not-so-scary way. We will talk through all the tasks you’ll be faced with when someone you love dies, and we’ll empower you to plan ahead.

Seventh edition of Steve Dawson-led iconic album extravaganza celebrates Bob Dylan’s groundbreaking album
Featuring: Barney Bentall, Jim Byrnes, Joachim Cooder , Maya de Vitry, Ndidi Onukwulu, Dawn Pemberton, Suzie Ungerleider and others
Our annual tradition of rounding up Vancouver’s most talented musicians to re-imagine a classic album continues! This edition of the popular two-night event features the Steve Dawson-led ensemble conjuring the peerless Bob Dylan as he was changing folk music forever with his sixth album Highway 61 Revisited. Recorded around the time of his hugely controversial electric performance at the Newport Folk FestivaI, the album launched a new, cutting-edge “folk-rock” sound complete with compelling lyrics that were light years ahead of anything else on the charts. Hearing the album at John Lennon’s house, Paul McCartney recalls, “it was just beautiful. He showed all of us that it was possible to go a little further.”
Since Dawson considers these performances “re-imaginings” rather than “tributes,” expect to hear such timeless songs as “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Desolation Row,” “Tombstone Blues” and the brilliant title track performed in styles entirely up to the artists’ inspiration.

Five-time Juno Award winner, Jane Bunnett has turned her bands and recordings into showcases for the finest musical talent from Canada, the US, and Cuba. She has been nominated for three Grammy Awards, received The Order of Canada, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and, most recently, The Premier’s Award for Excellence.
With Maqueque, Bunnett has created something new and phenomenal in the world of jazz. What started out five years ago as a project to record and mentor young brilliant Cuban female musicians, has become one of the top groups on the North American jazz scene. Since 2015, they have played in major jazz festivals like Newport and Monterey, been featured on NPR’s program Jazz Night in America, won a Juno Award for their first album, Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, were nominated for a Grammy Award for their second release, Oddara and were nominated for a Juno Award for their latest release, On Firm Ground/Tierra Firme. Most recently, were voted as one the top ten jazz groups by the prestigious DownBeat magazine’s critics poll.
An internationally acclaimed musician, Bunnett is known for her creative integrity, improvisational daring, and courageous artistry. Her exploration of Afro-Cuban melodies expresses the universality of music, and her ability to embrace and showcase the rhythms and culture of Cuba has been ground-breaking. She has toured the world bringing her own special sound to numerous jazz festivals, displaying her versatility as a flutist, saxophone player, and pianist.
Two documentaries have been made about Bunnett’s work: Spirits of Havana by the National Film Board was presented at numerous film festivals internationally, on television (CBC, PBS), and in Europe. A more recent film, Embracing Voices, has been shown at film festivals and is awaiting commercial release.
As an educator, spokesperson, and social activist, JANE remains unafraid to explore uncharted territory in her quest for excellence.

Speaker: Dr. Hilary Letwin
Alistair and Betty Bell lived in West Vancouver from 1941 until his death in 1997. Both were artists and exhibited their work publicly. Alistair’s printmaking career began after enrolling in an etching class at the then Vancouver School of Art in 1935. Alistair was awarded a Canada Council Senior Fellowship award in 1959, and again in 1967, at which time he retired as a draftsman at a major steel fabrication company and devoted himself entirely to printmaking. Betty, a painter, exhibited less regularly than Alistair. Later in her life, she ceased painting and destroyed all of her unsold work. The Bells were friends with many other artistic couples in Vancouver and West Vancouver, including B.C. and Jessie Binning, Gordon and Marion Smith, and Bruno and Molly Lamb Bobak. This talk explores the life and work of Betty and Alistair.

About Billy Bishop
William Avery (Billy) Bishop (1894-1956) was Canada’s highest scoring fighter pilot of World War 1, with 72 victories. Born on Feb. 8, 1894 in Owen Sound, Ontario, Bishop attended the Royal Military College in Kingston before joining the 8th Canadian Mounted Rifles once war began in 1914. Bishop sought and received a transfer to the British Royal Flying Corps in December 1915. He eventually received his pilot’s license in 1917 flying Nieuport 17s and SE5As. He was referred to as The Lone Hawk for his preference (like Albert Ball) for solo missions. Perhaps unfortunately for a member of the RFC, he was also regarded as something of a weak pilot, suffering from a tendency to crash land his aircraft. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for a single-handed attack against the German Aerodrome at Arras on June 2, 1917 and was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for the feat of scoring 25 kills within just 12 days as leader of the so-called Flying Foxes. Bishop survived the war (unlike a great many of his contemporaries) as commander of 85 Squadron. He was in fact withdrawn from active duty in June 1918 for fear that he would be shot down (with consequent ill-effect upon morale at home). The same year he published his war memoirs, Winged Warfare. After the armistice, Bishop initially traveled the U.S. giving lectures and co-founding (with fellow Canadian ace Billy Barker) a charter airline business, which went bankrupt. He eventually established himself as a successful sales director for Frontenac Oil in Canada. During World War II he served as Air Marshall with responsibility for Canadian recruitment. After the war he entered semi-retirement, later attempting to enlist (unsuccessfully) during the Korean War. He died peacefully November 9, 1956 in Florida.

MAKING CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED MUSIC FOR 30 YEARS.
When you think of Canadian music, who are the first contemporary artists that come to mind?
Is it a globe-touring sextet that, in a single set, can be counted on to stomp through Celtic reels, traditional Mexican folk, fiddle tunes, New Orleans brass band music, classic pop songcraft, bluegrass, and even a philosophical waltz or two, before bringing it all home with a Latino/West African singalong?
I didn’t think so.
Is it a fearless, freewheeling band sometimes referred to as the “Los Lobos of Canada,” veterans of an estimated 4,300 shows since the band’s 1992 formation?
What if I told you that this band doesn’t just exist—they flourish, and have been converting full concert halls of indifferent strangers into devoted fans for the last 30 years?
The name of this musical collective is The Paperboys. They are a Canadian treasure.
The heart of The Paperboys is a trio of gifted songwriters and musicians: Founder Tom Landa, a fedora-hatted vocalist/guitarist/bandleader who immigrated from Mexico to Canada in his teens; Kalissa Landa, a lifelong fiddler/vocalist with a preternatural command of melody; and Spirit of the West’s flautist/guitarist/vocalist Geoffrey Kelly, already a Canadian musical icon when he hopped on the P’boys bus in 1997.
Though by no means a jam band, The Paperboys reinvent their show every time they step onstage. Once the band agrees on the opening song, there is no set list. The song finishes, the crowd reacts, Landa reads the room, and the journey begins. Every night. The world has changed seismically since 1992, but The Paperboys fan base has stuck with the band, and grown.
“It goes beyond perseverance,” Landa says about the band’s legacy, “and into some kind of connectivity and resonance we have with people. We’ve created a community.”
Though best known for their live show, The Paperboys also have another ace up their sleeve: A deep and impressive discography. The band has released 10 recordings—including the Juno Award-winning Molinos—receiving accolades from MOJO Magazine and Roots Magazine along the way. They’ve been two-time recipients of the West Coast Music Award, composed scores for two films, and been nominated for a Leo Award for best original song in the Hong Kong/Canada film release, Lunch With Charles.
Although perennially adored and praised by alternative media and national radio networks NPR and CBC, commercial success has eluded the band. Undaunted, The Paperboys have kept in perpetual motion, building a cult following through the impact of its incendiary live show and proud DIY spirit.
Even the pandemic couldn’t silence The Paperboys. Tom and Kalissa maintained a warm connection with their homebound fans by posting their now-legendary Slipper Sessions online, playing gorgeous, stripped-down versions of their repertoire, with their kids and cats sometimes wandering through the margins of the videos.
“There are many ways to define success,” Landa says. “ I get to make music with people I love, tour and see the world, and connect with people through song. I can hang my hat on that.”
THE PAPERBOYS
Mexican Son Jarocho mixed in with Irish Jigs and Reels and a good dose of Country and Bluegrass. It has healthy servings of Ska, Soca and African Highlife and we’ve been known to throw in a little White Boy Reggae. Of course it also has strains of Soul, Pop and Funk although we are by no means a funk band. It is mostly Acoustic although we also like Electric guitars. It is Singer-Songwriter based but not the coffee house variety. It is definitely FOLK music, but not in the Kumbaya style. It has a deep respect and appreciation for tradition (Bluegrass, Old Time, Celtic, Son) but it’s by no means Traditional. It Rocks incredibly hard and is extremely danceable, but that is not to say it can’t be mellow and slow and beautiful. It can be heart breaking, but also joyous. It is never dark or angst ridden, and always full of hope – but not in the ‘Up With People’ kind of way. It’s not Jazz, although we like Jazz a lot. It’s not heavy metal or punk or grunge, although we love Rush and AC/DC. It is World Roots Music. It’s POP music. It is GOOD music. It has a tendency to connect people and means a lot to many folks the world over, and for that we are very grateful. It is the only multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-generational, multi-lingual, multi-instrumental, genre bending, co-ed band you will hear today!!

The Golden Road takes us on the sublime and sophisticated musical roads of ancient civilizations. Three music masters from Afghanistan, India and Iran come together to transcend the ancestral melodies from these rich and influential cultures. These three musical traditions have always evolved in a relationship of confluence and exchange, but have rarely been heard side by side. The great ambassador of Afghan music Homayoun Sakh, an incomparable virtuoso of the rubab lute, is with Maestro Shashank, hailed one of the best Bamboo Flute artists by the Indian and international media. They are joined by Kiya Tabassian, virtuoso of another emblematic lute, the setar, and their performances will be enriched and accompanied by the dazzling playing of the percussionist Hamin Honari on tombak & daf.

Speaker: Michael van den Bos

In the pantheon of preeminent 20th-century pop vocalists, one name remains king of the hill, top of the heap: FRANK SINATRA. With his ability to easily swivel between swinging songs of rapturous romance and living large to the moody blues of love lost and existential ennui, Sinatra mastered the art of lyrical expression . . . and he was an excellent Academy Award-winning actor, too! In this presentation, classic film scholar MICHAEL VAN DEN BOS (the biggest “Old Blue Eyes” fan you’ll likely meet) offers a ring-a-ding ding review of the Sinatra style. Featuring curated clips of “The Chairman of the Board” performing in classic films and vintage television shows that reinforce what Dean Martin said about his buddy: “It’s Frank’s world; we just live in it.”

In this Messiah production shepherded by Alexander Weimann, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, the outstanding soloists and the Pacific Baroque Orchestra embark on an inspired spiritual and artistic journey toward a new, vibrant way of unlocking Handel’s most masterful work. “Even after having conducted this piece a few dozen times, and having played it some hundred times earlier, I am still puzzled how conclusive and coherent it comes to live in performance. It does not have a narrative as we would find in other oratorios, at least not at the surface, and the form is quite unusual. It feels like a novel whose protagonist we never directly meet, but carefully and gently approach through a sequence of portrayals and depictions of their birth, life, suffering, death and legacy, and what all that means to us. In my years of knowing the piece, I have found the Messiah a sacred, but not exclusively religious subject, rather the account of a universal and inclusive human quest.” (Alexander Weimann, March 2023)

McEwen Theatre
Founded in 1992, musica intima is a collaborative and conductor-less vocal ensemble which has championed Canadian music on stages around the world, and garnered a Western Canadian Music Award and three JUNO Award nominations across ten commercially released albums. Their most recent collaboration with Cree composer Andrew Balfour, NAGAMO, seeks to forge a new path towards the decolonization of the choral arts. www.musicaintima.org
Come in from the cold to spend an evening ‘In Winter’s House’ with vocal ensemble musica intima. Centering around Indian-American composer Reena Esmail’s ‘A Winter Breviary,’ the program traces a journey towards the longest night of the year, the solstice, and honours the dark while celebrating the return of the light.
Through music of Sherryl Sewepagaham, Juhi Bansal, Joanna Marsh, and the late Jocelyn Morlock – and arrangements of familiar tunes by Joanna Forbes, Canadian folk trio The O’Pears, Trombone Shorty, and ensemble members – the ensemble will welcome the dawning light to illumine the darkness. Known for their thoughtful programming and flawless execution, the voices of musica intima will warm your heart.

When Annie’s husband John dies of leukemia, she and her long-standing best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. With varying levels of encouragement, they persuade four friends and fellow members of the Women’s Institute (W.I.) to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar. They are assisted by hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence, who looked after John in his final days. This is much to the horror of their local W.I. chairman, Marie. The success of the calendar goes beyond their wildest dreams and they have soon raised the money needed and much more. Their efforts also catch the attention of the national and international press, who soon descend on the small village of Knapely in the Yorkshire Dales. Although the calendar is a huge success, Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test with their new-found fame and Chris is forced to question her real motivation behind doing the calendar. Tim Firth’s hilarious play is based on the true story of eleven W.I. members who famously posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund in 1999.

”The real thing, people.” -Billboard
Martin Sexton returns with what RollingStone calls his “soul-marinated voice,” acoustic guitar, and a suitcase full of heartfelt songs. The 2023 Tour takes Martin across North America in support of his latest ep 2020 Vision (produced by 3-time Grammy nominee John Alagia (Lukas Nelson, John Mayer, Dave Matthews) as well as reinventing his own classics for these critically-acclaimed solo Performances.
Still fiercely independent and headlining venues from The Fillmore to Carnegie Hall, he has influenced a generation of contemporary artists. His songs have appeared in television series such as Scrubs, Parenthood, Masters of Sex, Sprung, and in numerous films, though it’s his incendiary live show, honest lyrics, and vocal prowess that keep fans coming back for a new experience every time.
