Artist Bio:
Nathaniel Marchand is a Métis and Franco-Ontarian multi-disciplinary artist, songwriter and educator currently based on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. His practice considers relationships to land, ethnobotanical histories and the materiality of the natural world. He has received a Certificate in Fine Arts from the Yukon School of Visual Arts and a BFA in Video Production from Concordia University.
Artist Statement:
Inspired by the alluring and abundant seasonal plants from where I have resided over the past several years, this series of botanical collages seeks to suspend the ephemeral beauty of flower petals, leaves, seeds, spore prints and natural pigments, exploring their forms and colours to create engaging compositions that, at first glance, may not appear to be plants at all. From the foraging of materials in gardens and in nature, to the time consuming pressing and preservation of plant materials, to the meticulous application of each element, petal by petal, these mixed media natural collages are as much about the process as the final result. Revealing layers and patterns, this body of work rewards those who observe closely and spend time with each piece. In this re-appropriation of natural materials, I hope to provoke onlookers to reconsider how they experience these plants, to question the various manners we manipulate the natural world and also to inspire them to reconnect to nature in their own ways.
