Event Details
The Welsh-born, Brighton-based guitarist Gwenifer Raymond’s rich, powerful solo acoustic instrumental music first took flight with her debut album, You Never Were Much Of A Dancer. A 13-song flurry of acoustic guitar and banjo compositions – very much in the vein of the big hitter of American primitive music John Fahey – the record is a riveting demonstration of her often-blistering playing. On Raymond’s second release, Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain, she has composed music that’s much more individual and confident. |
The roots of Raymond’s music
lie in the pre-war blues of the American south and Appalachian folk music. As
The Guardian notes, “her specific field of solo guitar is known as
‘American primitive.’ John Fahey (1939-2001), the father of the genre, coined
the term, and a number of acolytes have since taken up this mesmeric,
meditative form that, with its open tunings and air of mystery, has as much
in common with Indian ragas and drone-based music as it does Anglo-US
fingerpicking… The sound Raymond makes is so cavernous, evocative and
frenetic, it sounds as though at least two more guitarists are hiding
somewhere in the wings.”
The guitarist’s awe-inspiring technique and intense musicality should make for a transporting evening!

Carlo Morena is one of Italy’s foremost jazz pianists and has performed and recorded with musicians such as Dave Liebman, Bob Mintzer, John Abercrombie, and Charlie Mariano. Morena met Vancouver guitarist, Jared Burrows, in 2016 and the two found that they share a similar approach to composition and harmony influenced by European composers such as Kenny Wheeler and Enrico Pieranunzi. Compositions by Burrows and Morena will be presented along with a few choice standards. Rounding out the band for this tour are Joe Poole (drums) and Brent Gubbels (bass), two of Vancouver most in-demand veteran sidemen. Expect an evening of intimate, chamber jazz with frequent excursions into swinging groove territory.

A two-night celebration of the BlueShore at CapU’s profound legacy of enriching the North Shore’s cultural landscape, our 25th Anniversary Gala presents an extravaganza of favourite performers who’ve inspired appreciative, filled-to-capacity audiences.
The line-up for both evenings features the North Shore’s own jazz icon Dee Daniels performing with the 18-woman Sister Jazz Orchestra; the return of the deeply admired former NiteCap musical director Réjean Marois, leading an all-star ensemble of CapU NiteCap alumni; and Mississippi Sheiks Revisited, a journey through the 1930s country-blues band’s musical gems (“Sitting on Top of the World,” anyone?) with Steve Dawson, Jim Byrnes, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Suzie Ungerleider, Daniel Lapp and many others.
Stay tuned for more highlights to be announced soon!

From the moment he steps on stage, Denzal Sinclaire possesses that rare ability to achieve a profound connection with his audience. His passionate delivery caresses every song he sings.
A specialist in the music of Nat King Cole, Sinclaire’s silky vocals echo the romantic, soothing sound that made Cole a legend. The finger-snapping Sinclaire is also a savvy curator of great tunes, so you can also expect a treasure trove of other musical gems when he performs with CapU’s various jazz ensembles.
Sinclaire lived in Vancouver in the mid-1990s, where, in addition to singing, he found work as an actor. His credits include appearances in the film Being Julia and the TV series Battlestar Gallactica. He also branched out into drumming and singing with the funky group B3 Kings. Later, when Sinclaire lived in Berlin, he assumed a poppier musical identity as part of British soul artist Jamie Lidell’s band, on keyboards and backing vocals.
The Toronto-based singer is a two-time Juno Award-nominee. Label-mate Diana Krall is a fan: “He is one of my favourite singers,” she says.

When their family seeks shelter during a storm, two sisters, Alice and Lorina, become trapped in a strange realm of magical creatures ruled by a blood-thirsty Queen of Hearts. Separated and alone, they must each call upon the courage they never knew they had to navigate their way through a backwards-world back to one another and their family. Named for the twelfth night after Christmas, Twelfth Night plays with love and power. The Countess Olivia, a woman with her own household, attracts Duke (or Count) Orsino. Two other would-be suitors are her pretentious steward, Malvolio, and Sir Andrew Aguecheek.
Onto this scene arrive the twins Viola and Sebastian. Caught in a shipwreck, each thinks the other has drowned. Viola disguises herself as a male page and enters Orsino’s service. Orsino sends her as his envoy to Olivia—only to have Olivia fall in love with the messenger. William Shakespeare’s play complicates, then wonderfully untangles, these relationships.

For 17 years, Anna Maria Tremonti hosted CBC Radio One’s The Current, where her mix of hard-edged journalism and hard-won empathy helped build the show into Canada’s most listened-to radio program. She is currently the host of Welcome to Paradise on CBC Podcasts. Her recognizable voice, thoughtful questions, and her approach to finding the humanity in the people one meets, captivate listeners.
Drawing from both her personal experience and the lessons she’s learned through her interviews with others, Tremonti sheds light on pursuing growth and questioning the status quo. This presentation will inspire audiences while also equipping them with the skills needed to assess risk, rationalize fear, find opportunity, carry on through failure, and reimagine success.

When Tonquest Magazine wrote, “another stellar Campilongo record from the fertile mind of Jim Campilongo. How does he do it? Damned if we know,” they were looking at an overview of Campilongo’s 14 solo releases and commenting on his music’s growth and diversity. The Jim Campilongo 4 Tet is another step in this evolution.
The 4 Tet is driven by long-time Brooklyn collaborators, guitarist Luca Benedetti (Ron Carter, Steve Gadd), bassist Andy Hess (John Scofield, Gov’t Mule) and drummer Dan Reiser (Rosanne Cash, Youn Sun Nah), who all bring their sound and style to create a unique, distilled power. Their chemistry, focus and mutual admiration create a transcendent universe of sounds.
Billboard Magazine calls Jim Campilongo “an American treasure,” an accolade this highly artistic and influential guitarist richly deserves. Also known as a sensitive and refined sideman, Campilongo has played with Norah Jones, Bright Eyes, Martha Wainwright, JJ Cale, Gillian
Welch, Teddy Thompson and Burning Spear to name a few.
