Autumn is a season tailor-made for the curious! The bright colours of the North Shore nature are like a vibrant invitation to get out and explore, while the brisk air rolling down from the mountains is a refreshing reminder to keep following your adventurous side. So with that in mind, we’ve created a handful of fun fall outings that pair local cuisine and creativity. Many of our most notable galleries are just a stone’s skip from community-favourite cafes and eateries, so what better way to spotlight them together? North Shore artists and chefs are ready to show you their latest creations, and each of the following spots is a way to catch a glimpse (and a taste) of how they’ve been inspired by the season so far.
Local Character and Comfort Food – (Monova + Tomahawk Restaurant)

Take a tour through local history, including the stories of our community’s first inhabitants, the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Peoples and then stop by Canada’s oldest family-run restaurant (in operation since 1926!). An excellent pairing if you’re looking to get a sense of the culture on Vancouver’s North Shore. Both businesses highlight work by Indigenous artists, offering a richer perspective of the heritage that lives here.

Wonder and Wanders by the Waterfront – (Polygon Gallery + The Food Hall & Bar at the Lonsdale Quay Market)

The Polygon Gallery
Right on the water, these two Shipyards landmarks are hard to miss once you hop off the SeaBus! At the Polygon you’ll find award-winning international programming, rooted in photography, that is sure to keep you on your toes, while at the neighbouring Food Hall you can stroll through the enticing smells coming from each unique stall before you dig into your next globally-inspired course.

Take a wander out to Ambleside for this quaint community pairing! A quick walk along the seaside path and you’ll find The Ferry Building Gallery. Housed inside one of West Vancouver’s oldest buildings, this public art space is dedicated to community building, with a schedule of rotating exhibits and hands-on workshops. Then just across the street, you’ll find Crema. Another community gathering place where good conversations are had over fresh-baked goods and waterfront views. A solid two stops for catching up with an old friend!

An Active Outing With Some Added Greenery – (CityScape Community ArtSpace + The Workshop Vegetarian Cafe)
While these two might be a tiny bit further from each other, the North Shore Spirit Trail (a fully accessible 35km greenway that extends from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove) makes it a solid opportunity for a two-wheeled tour. You’ll start at this friendly art spot on Lonsdale that specializes in group exhibitions with an interactive component. You’re sure to meet new people as spontaneous discussions are bound to happen while wandering between each piece. Then, hop on your bike and ride towards the hearty plant-based meals at the Workshop, which will keep you warm and well fed with fresh local ingredients (any of their delicious ramen will definitely do the trick!).
One now at CityScape Gallery: Angles & Curves: Contemporary Hard-Edge Abstraction (Until November 14th)
Family Fun and Fiesta – (Gordon Smith Gallery + Tequila Cantina)

Head up Lonsdale Ave from the water, and you’ll come across these two local gems. The Gordon Smith Gallery is the only gallery in Canada dedicated to young artists, with programming focused on exploring curiosity, asking questions and cultivating emerging talent. Bring your little ones to one of their creative workshops and then head to Tequila Cantina for a tasty round of nachos, tacos and enchiladas. Split an order of churros with ice cream to finish, and you’ve got yourself a pretty great family outing!
