After many (many) months of eager anticipation, the craft beer scene on Vancouver’s North Shore is finally complete! On October 4, Hearthstone Brewery finally opened their doors to join the four already established North Shore craft breweries and promises “warmth and solace” while enjoying a finely crafted local beer.

With over 100 breweries and brewpubs, it’s a great time to be a beer enthusiast in British Columbia, and with the addition of Hearthstone, North Vancouver is fully entrenched in the craft-brewing renaissance.

Thanks to John Mitchell, an ambitious craft brewer who started Canada’s first craft brewery, Horseshoe Bay Brewing, Vancouver’s North Shore could be referred to as the birthplace of craft beer. And from those first pints to the growlers of today, North Vancouver’s craft brewers continue to be recognized globally for craft beer excellence!
October is BC Craft Beer Month and we recommend celebrating the craft beer movement by visiting a North Shore craft brewery (or 5) for a tasting and a tour! Don’t forget your designated driver, or take advantage of the public transit system and let someone else do the heavy driving.

Hearthstone Craft Brewery
The newest addition to North Vancouver’s craft beer scene, Hearthstone has taken over the space previously occupied by Red Truck Brewing. Hearthstone Tap Room & Forno officially opened on October 4 and will be serving up authentic Italian pizzas accompanied by your choice of hand-crafted beer. They currently offer 10 different varieties, including the curious Graham Cracker Ale and Chocolate Milk Stout.

Don’t miss – Be one of the first to try their wood-fired pizzas, grilled to perfection in the double pizza forno.

Deep Cove Brewers and Distillers
One of the North Shore’s first craft breweries, Deep Cove Brewers & Distillers (DCBD) includes a stylish tasting room (and patio), extensive menu and award-winning beer and spirits. Sample some of their year-round beers such as the Lookout Session Ale (in homage to Quarry Rock) or the Deep Cove Lager or try a seasonal, like the newly released Yuzo Wit.

Don’t miss – On October 24 Deep Cove Brewers are hosting a Meet the Brewer Beer Dinner. Enjoy a 4-course beer-pairing menu featuring DCBD’s Head Brewer Brett Jamieson. Tickets are available here.

Located at the south end of Lonsdale Quay, Green Leaf Brewing is the perfect place to stop after an afternoon of shopping in the market. Their year-round beers include the Pie Hole Pale Ale and Bitter Leaf IPA, while under the category of “unique and experimental” you’ll find a Blackberry Sour or the Modern Gentleman IPA. Green Leaf Brewing also encourages the creative use of beer in foods found around the Quay!

Don’t Miss – Every Friday night listen to live music while you enjoy your favourite Green Leaf brew, and Open Mic night is bi-weekly. Performers (of legal age) on Open Mic night get a free glass of beer!

Bridge Brewing Company
Bridge Brewing originally came on to the craft-brewing scene in 2012 as Vancouver’s first nano-brewery. Fast- forward 4 years and Bridge is definitely no longer a nano-brewery. In fact, it’s not unusual for their cozy tasting room to be at capacity with craft-beer enthusiasts enjoying a glass of the delicious Bourbon Blood Orange Wheat Ale or their signature North Shore Pale Ale.

Don’t Miss – Stop by on a rainy fall day, order a flight of whatever’s on tap and enjoy deciding which Bridge Brewing beer is your favourite.

Tucked away in a warehouse space in an industrial area of North Vancouver, Black Kettle prides itself on brewing small batches of beer with quality ingredients. Settle into the tasting room and watch the brewers as they create hop magic! Order a flight and try 4 of their current beers on tap, and be sure to go home with a growler of your favourite.

Don’t miss – Quality craft beer brewed with 100% green energy!
