Event Details

A Kay Meek Jazz Violin Presentation
McEwen Theatre

Kit Eakle, a celebrated jazz violinist and student of the history of jazz violin will appear with his new group ‘Jazz ’n’ the Violin.’ The concert, like the concert series to come, will feature music spanning the full breadth of that history, from its roots in Africa, to the heyday of swing with Stephane Grappelli and Stuff Smith, through the fusion sounds of Jean-Luc Ponty and beyond.

Eakle, whose exciting fiddle playing has graced the KMAC stage in previous concerts, has also appeared internationally with the likes of guitar great Howard Alden and pianist Larry Vuckovich, as well as his brother, noted flute player, Matt Eakle, of the David Grisman Quintet.

Eakle’s new group features the fine pianist and vocalist Tom Arntzen, of the North Shore’s legendary Arntzen clan, guitarist Daryl Jahnke who has toured across Canada and from Cuba to Japan, New York and the UK, bassist Noah Gotfrit, a young up and coming bass player who has already made a mark from his home city here in Vancouver to New Orleans with the likes of Quinn Bachand and Brishen, and the versatile drummer Craig Scott, well known to Vancouver audiences for his work with musicians from Ian McDougall and Ross Taggart, to Randy Bachman.

The breadth of this outfit’s stylistic scope is breath-taking, with something for everyone wrapped up in a package of historical knowledge and musical stories that will expand your understanding of jazz and the pleasures of music.
