Outdoor Activities Not to be Missed When Visiting Vancouver's North Shore
December 2008
(North Vancouver, BC): Many visitors come to Vancouver to see the coast, taste the food and enjoy the natural beauty. Often travelers want to get out of the big city, sometimes for an hour, sometimes for a day and sometimes for the entire length of their stay. There is nowhere more convenient than Vancouver's North Shore for these trips into nature.
Nestled at the base of the mountains, the North Shore is home to the thriving suburbs of North and West Vancouver. Crossing one of two bridges to the North Shore makes a trek to the place where nature lives, a short drive away from the hubbub of downtown Vancouver. The mountains and the coastline along the North Shore offer many diversions for Vancouver visitors.
Mountain biking is always fun, whether done at breakneck speed down the side of a mountain on the many trails in "North Van", or at a more leisurely pace along the rivers and ocean front of the shore. Many local bike shops offer hourly and daily rentals for these outings.
Hiking can also be enjoyed in North and West Vancouver. Challenging Day hikes up the Grouse Grind or on trails other local mountains can both challenge and delight any hearty hiker. Shorter walks into the rain forests of the North Shore are plentiful, all offering varied lengths of walks and sights to see. Walkers can enjoy a stroll beside the mouth of the Lynn Creek. Lynn Valley Headwaters Park is full of meandering trails for those looking for some fresh air in the majestic trees that make the North Shore Mountains so green. If walkers are looking for a stroll with fellow urbanites, just outside of the downtown core, an effortless drive to Ambleside Park leads folks to a quaint seawall full of local walkers, joggers and their pets.
When winter turns the deep blue-green of the mountains to a shimmering white, the snow covered mountains offer up a whole new selection of activities. skiing on three local mountains, all within an hour's drive from downtown makes it easy to get a away from the City's pace to enjoy the slopes for the day. Snow shoeing is an excellent way to work out the kinks, getting a wonderful winter workout. Old fashioned sledding and tobogganing cannot be forgotten. However, the updated version of tubing on the snow is a winter romp not to be missed.
